Port Hedland Buy-Back steaming ahead

23 June 2022

  • 150 eligible properties sold to Hedland Maritime Initiative
  • 61% of eligible residential property owners have received an offer

Hedland Maritime Initiative is excited to announce it has now acquired 150 properties through the Port Hedland Voluntary Buy-Back Scheme (PHVBS).

In addition, owners of a further 24 properties have accepted offers, which is 41 per cent of eligible properties.

Hedland Maritime Initiative Managing Director Karlene Bylund said this is a fantastic milestone to achieve in the first 18 months of the PHVBS.

“We have achieved this milestone ahead of our initial projections, which is a testament to the attractive offer on the table for eligible PHVBS property owners,’ Ms Bylund said.
“The majority of these acquisitions have been from investor owners, and I would like to reassure tenants that HMI will honour their leases for the agreed term, or until alternative accommodation is available.”

Plans are progressing with a variety of stakeholders to repurpose several of the acquired properties in line with the Maritime Precinct Masterplan and Port Hedland West End Improvement Scheme No.1.

“This includes an interim training facility, which will see marine simulation equipment relocated to Port Hedland to be used for essential training for marine pilots, tug crews and other marine professions,” Ms Bylund added.

“Works are also progressing to build a new Seafarers’ Centre, with the old Sealanes building on Richardson Street demolished to make way for the new centre.

“I look forward to more announcements later this year as these exciting developments progress.”
